The Taff Trail:Abercynon
Abercynon
Abercynon is situated on the side of the valley at the junction of the Rivers Cynon (Aberdare) and Taff (Merthyr Tydfil). The previous two stations are now joined into one which is well placed to transport cyclists intent on riding this section of the trail (or the Celtic Trail towards Newport). They provide trains to/from Cardiff, Abderdare and Merthyr. Cycle access is less convenient than previously so give yourself plenty of time to get from the `trail to the platform.
Abercynon to Pontypridd
(approx 4.7 miles 7.5km)
This part of the Taff Trail runs along a common line with both National Cycleway Routes 8 and 47. From Abercynon fire station, follow the main road and down the road opposite Navigation House, follow the street in Martins Terrace and over to the right we join a recently constructed path through to the the Cilfynydd Welfare Rugby Ground. Across a lane the path continues alongside the fields and river, then up the hill to Coedpenmaen Rd.
Turn right to drop down Bonvilston Road, following the one-way system to the A470 interchange.
Abercynon to Quakers Yard

Tram Road Side starts off as an insignificant little lane between highways depot and the river. However as we progress, the valley gets narrower as we squeeze along the gorge between the river and the main road which, unseen, is many feet above our heads. Eventually the A470, then the A472 cross over high viaducts completely ignoring the trail and the fast flowing river below.
We then pass a few houses, cross the river, pass above a caravan park along a back lane into Quaker's Yard.
