The Taff Trail: Brecon

Brecon

Brecon is the northern end of the Taff Trail.

Sustrans National Cycle Route No 8 leaves the Taff Trail to continue North through the length of Wales.

The Taff Trail starts in the area near the theatre and the canal basin, a very attractive area. The Tipple ‘n’ Tiffin, the theatre restaurant is most welcome but it is often closed on days when there are lots of visitors around.

The Trail sets out from the Theatre, then going along a road parallel to the canal for approximately 1 km before joining the canal.

Except for this section, the Monmouth and Brecon Canal prohibits cycling on the towpath since most of it is rather narrow (especially by the bridges) and a large number of cyclists along with walkers and fishermen will cause a hazard to all. On the way out of Brecon, however the towpath has been widened to double width to allow cycling.

From Brecon to Llanfrynach

(approx 2.7 miles 4.3km)

Starting at the canal basin, cycle around the back of the theatre - or walk across the front.

The trail runs along a road parallel to the canal for approximately 1 km before joining. This section of the towpath was widened to double width using funds from the European Community. Cycle under 2 bridges before arriving at Brynich Lock.

Pass through a gate onto the road. Cyclists now leave the canal, turning right into the B4558 and across the bridge over the River Usk. Trail users on foot can continue along the canal towpath right through to Talybont-on-Usk.

After less than half a mile turn right to Llanfrynach.

National Cycle Network Route 8

Brecon is the Northern end of the Taff Trail. NCN Route 8 does however continue right through the heart of Wales. Find out more from the Sustrans website.
