The Taff Trail:Garwnant

Garwnant Visitors Centre

Garwnant is on the Taf Fawr part of the Taff Trail. Where the main cycle route between Merthyr Tyfil and Brecon runs in the Taf Fechan, the Taf Fawr is the route used by the A470 main road.

At Garwnant, the Forestry Commission Wales, run a visitors centre. In addition to a large Car Park and Cafe there are numerous facilities available. Please check the Forestry Commission link on the links page for details.

Local walks and cycle routes are available of varying standards and duration, with further information leaflets availeble in the Cafe.

It should be noted that the cycle route to Cefn Coed is strenuous and the path running north beyond the woodland is not recemmended. Whilst you may consider the A470 road to be a suitable alternative, this single carriageway road carries traffic at high speed and cannot be considered safe for cyclists.

If arriving at Garwnant by other transport, it is ideal location for a family day out. The Brecons Bike Bus from Cardiff calls here (check the link for more information).

North from Garwnant

The route North from Garwnant to Brecon via the Storey Arms is unsuitable for `normal` cyclists and will not be covered here.
