The Taff Trail:Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil
The nearest point on the Taff Trail to the centre of Merthyr Tydfil is by the college. It is also a very large Pay and Display Car Park.
To the south is a quiet roadway leading to traffic-free paths along the western side of the River Taff.
To the north is a rather difficult connection, crossing a number of main roads etc. before getting back to traffic free paths just before the former Cyfarthfa Iron Works.
The Station at Merthyr Tydfil is the end of the line from Cardiff and is in the town centre. There is better access to the Taff Trail from Pentrebach Station.
Merthyr Tydfil to Abercanaid
(approx 1.6 miles 2.5km)
From Merthyr College the Taff Trail starts just past the river footbridge which leads to the Town Centre.
Pass under the bridge with mozaics showing an image of valleys life and its history, and past the Rhydycar Leisure Centre.
A short rise then turn left under a bridge then down onto the towpath of the former Glamorganshire Canal. The Taff Trail follows the canal for the next 5 miles and later after a gap for a further 2 miles.
